Outdated requested photos
Hi guys! I originally went over to Category:Wikipedia requested breed photographs in order to help find some images for articles. I actually ended up spending some time removing defunct {{reqbreedphoto}}, some of which were placed over two years ago and had since had the requested images added. It's a crappy job, and i'm going to bed for the night, but i thought i would mention this to you in case there's anyone out there who likes this kind of tedious work. I left a note at the dog breed taskforce, too. Enjoy! -???????????? BabelAlexandria 07:54, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

"Dog parking"
Hi! I took a picture today of a "dog parking" section of a parking lot for cars. I thought it was funny. Are there any articles that discuss dog parking? Punkmorten (talk) 17:17, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think so, but that is really funny. Who would park their dog in the snow!? Can you remember to get a picture of it when there is no snow, so it doesn't look so mean? ? JohnnyMrNinja 17:32, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Temperament sections
The previous discussion was archived. The suggestion was that Temperament sections in breed articles be eliminated, as they all have the same unreferenced platitudes --"Good with children", etc. --Hafwyn (talk) 05:40, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
1. Should Temperament sections be eliminated?
2. If not, what would be a good source of information about temperament?
- as someone who doesn't really contribute much to dog articles specifically, but to random articles on animals and pets in general, i think that the temeperment sections could be useful and encyclopedic, but i agree that currently it seems to only be a dumping ground for opinions about different breeds. IMO, if every dog breed is good with children, then we don't need to say it on any specific breed article. if we commit to providing balanced neutral information in those sections they have a right to stay. as for sources, i think it would be fair to have a guideline about avoiding breed-specific sites for that kind of information, and avoiding sites that classify all breeds as well-tempered. i know i've seen encyclopedias out there stating quite plainly that such-and-such breed is not good with small children or other pets. -- ???????????? Puppy Mills
The Puppy Mill topic is a truthful documentation and portrayal of what happens within this world today. I think the information is given out to all to educate truthfully. When the main concern seems to be money it is then time to turn the question to those who attempt to stop this information being conveyed with truth. The right of free expression is of everyone in this world is it not? We are all born with some aspect of ourselves that can communicate, so thus we have the purpose of communication as vital aspects of our lives.
Please allow this to Puppy Mill article to continue in its truth and to assist others to become informed and thus to enable empowerment of the puppies in need and to save their lives from these terrible states of existence.

Hello how can I do a page on the New Zealand Miniature Fox terrier?
This breed of dog has been in New Zealand for a number of years. Here is a web site for more information.
http://www.minifoxys.com/ it is completely differant to the Aussie mini foxie. This breed of dog has alot of support in New zealand. --Preceding unsigned comment added by Nzminfoxys (talk o contribs) 06:29, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Jack Russell Terrier
Could I draw this project's attention to this article. It seems to have been hijacked a little bit by the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America who have some form of ownership over the name of the breed in the US but this clearly doesn't represent a world view. Another editor and myself are proposing moving this page to a separate one about their own breed and starting one about the Jack Russell Terrier in more general terms from a fresh. Any help would be appreciated - especially as I have no experience with this! Cheers Smartse (talk) 19:11, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Basset hound
There seems to a dispute regarding the article on basset hounds. I contend that having pet names in the image captions is a bad idea - this isn't a gallery for people to show off their dogs. The proper way to use images can be seen in the featured article on beagles - where images and image captions serve to assist in the description of the dog, not just to show off individual dogs. The image description pages can have dog names, but having them in the article adds nothing and possible detracts from the article. The only reason the names are there is for people to show off their dogs and there are plenty of other places where people can do that - but not on Wikipedia. --Jtalledo (talk) 00:20, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
As wikipedia is often used as an educational resource, it would seem counterproductive to incorporate pet names in the wiki. I agree with Jtalledo above that the focus would be better served with images of breeds, not specific dogs. These individuals can place Fluffy or Boris's mugshot on a personal blog or wiki that won't likely contribute to academia and distort a child's conception of a dog breed. --Upah (talk) 19:07, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Saarloos Wolfhound
Hello all, I am experiencing some diffuculty with changing the page for the Saarloos Wolfhound. Someone keeps on changing the ownership back, putting the breed of as dangerous to children and some other falsenesses. The Dutch version of the wikipedia will show these false 'facts' but unfortuneatly not everyone speaks dutch. I do, I am dutch. This is a dutch breed and I know alot of breeders, I even have a racial book at home and it tells about a very social shy dog, which mothers human kids, is not supposed to be dominated because it might flee. Can someone help me put right this injustice? 14:16, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
Tamaskan Dog
Hi All. I came across Tamaskan Dog, which to me appears to be a bit lacking in verifiable sources and notability (which might not be fixable since the breed was reportedly created by two breeders in 2002). The current article suggests that the French Bulldog is a result of breeding small English Bulldogs.
I was watching a show on animal planet the other night and they said the French Bulldog was the result of cross breeding the english bulldog with a Pug and a Terrier.

A discussion is underway about possible merging the Pal (dog actor) article to Lassie. Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee
Hey all. I started the Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee site several months back, and I called it that because most articles about Westminster winners used their formal names, rather than their nicknames. (Ex: K-Run's Park Me In First rather than "Uno".) But the more I think about it, the more I feel like Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee should be called "Stump (dog)" instead. I figure you guys would be the experts, so what do you think? Should it be moved? -- Hunter Kahn (c) 01:54, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
- I would not change the article name. A reader looking for Stump will hit the Stump disambiguation page, which will direct the reader to Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee. Using disambiguation paratheses in article titles is generally avoided unless absolutely necessary. Coaster1983 (talk) 01:11, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Temperament test
Temperament testing has been in the news recently,[1] but the article was in a very primitive state (about wolfhound testing in Russia only) and is tagged as low-importance to your project. I did some basic expansion but the article is less than 10% of what it should be. I think that you should reassess the article and add more information about the Assess-A-Hand and SAFER test in the U.S. and how they affect reported rates of euthanasia of "adoptable" dogs and so on. I think that this topic could become very interesting indeed, as an uncommonly honest measure of psychiatric practice. Wnt (talk) 03:56, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

hey guys!
I thought this would be the right place to come as I figure you guys love dogs, and as far as I can see there isn't a wiki-project pugs. Now me and my wife had lots of the little scamps, and I was involved in making first a category and then a page about films featuring pugs. Now sadly the powers that be went against us in that debate, and yet I've managed to keep a little pug movie corner of my user page for it: User:Hands of gorse, heart of steel/the pug place. Here's hoping one day this Wiki'll have a place for films about pugs. Anyway, that's not the reason I'm here, but it's good to see you guys anyway. I'm here because I was talking to my wife about designing a pug userbox for my userpage, which I've made... it's got my own pug design that is also used in my pug barnstar: Template:Pug Barnstar. I just thought, if you guys wanted to put it on your userpage too, I could put it here. Let me know if there's a better place. Anyway, I'd better go, I've got pugs to tend to! Keep up the good work with the dogs - I've always been a dog lover and so has my wife. She was telling me the other day that she couldn't live without a load of dogs. And I agree. See ya around! Over-focus on the show/breeding aspects
I just read a few articles on specific dog types. Something that struck me throughout was an over-focus on "the show aspect", e.g. minimum heights, specific ideal proportions and colors, and similar. Great dane is a good example of this.
While this is understandable in as far as many of the authors will have a background related to shows or breeding, it is IMO out of place. The main focus should be put on the dogs from a more general POV, where dogs are biological organisms, where the general aspects of their place in society are discussed, whatnot. The show parts are of a more limited interest both encyclopedically and with regard to the non-specialist reader, and would be better off in a section of its own. (Even among specialists only a sub-group will be interested: The typical zoologist or veterinarian is unlikely to see this as the central issue.) Michael Eriksson (talk) 05:15, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
-
- I think from the species perspective, the Dog article is the one you want to go to. For the breeds, I certainly discourage using the various standards for the breed and go with other sources that give a broader perspective. The standards are meant to be aspirational and not a specific description of every specimen of a particular breed. Miyagawa (talk) 00:07, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
-
- The standard does define the breed, though. It is the primary source of information on breed appearance and characteristics. It it breeding to a standard rather than to performance that has given us distinct modern breeds. Most people would not recognise working Border Collies, or Royal Blind Society Goldens as pure breds simply because they were bred for performance not appearance. The standard describes what the breed should look like. But I agree the articles should not be written from a 'competitive conformation' perspective. Marj (talk) 05:50, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
I guess it comes down to who the reader is. Is it a zoologist or vet, or someone trying to decide between a Great Dane and and Irish Wolfhound as a family pet? I guess a featured article should address both. Marj (talk) 05:58, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Collaboration
Hey, Just wondering if it would be worthwhile putting together a collaboration page for the project (I don't mind putting it together and keeping an eye on it). The model I would suggest is something similar to this: Wikipedia:WikiProject Birds/Collaboration. There is a link already on the project page, but it's a red link and I don't know if its actually being developed.
Once it went up it'd probably be best to do a mailshot to everyone on the Dogs editor's list so that it gets a decent amount of use.
Any thoughts? Miyagawa (talk) 13:09, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- A collaboration page for this project is long overdue. I would support the creation of a collaboration page. I would nominate both Dog and Grey Wolf since they are two of the most important articles in the project.Coaster1983 (talk) 22:11, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
-
- I've shamelessly knocked off the Birds Project collaboration page (I'm sure it'll be adjusted by others as time goes by). Anyway, the page is now action here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Dogs/Collaboration. Miyagawa (talk) 22:33, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
I don't understand the collaboration page. What is it that we are voting for? If I want to contribute to a nominated page, do I just start or register my interest somewhere? Do I wait until there has been a result in the 'election'? Marj (talk) 07:33, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Mainly just wait until there has been a result. The idea is that there ends up being one page a month, although for the first month we won't have one. Come to think about it, we could just set the first month to the Dog article as it seems the obvious choice and that way we won't be without a project for another 18 days. Opinions? Miyagawa (talk) 18:43, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- I agree with your proposal. Dog is close to returning to GA status. With some editing and expansion of the article, we should be able to reach GA status quite easily. Perhaps a peer review of the article would be a good starting point.Coaster1983 (talk) 16:44, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Service Dogs - Owner Trained
I was reading the article about Service Dogs. The reference of my discussion comes from the Program Trained Dogs verses Owner Trained Dogs Section / Paragraph 2 " Owner Trained dogs usually start too young to be thoroughly evaluated."
Please know that a canine pup considered for service dog work should start to be evaluated from the days their eyes open (at 10-12 days old, pending on the breed). Only through observation of very young pups(2-7 weeks of age)is it possible to get a true reading. It is important to observe which pup is strongest and strives for the "best" teet. Once they crawl, one must observe which pup(s) always tries to crawl on top of the rest. Another example: Intentionally one should find something to start a very loud unfamiliar noise (eg. lawnmower, compressor, skreetching tires, etc.)Which of the pups squeel and run into the barn for shelter? Which of the pups stand still and look curiously? Which of the pups run forward to "kill" the intruder? The Observation should be written on the bahavior of each pup. These observations then serve as rudimentary catagorizing when combined with other sense/reaction testings.
By the time they reach 6 weeks of age, it should be obvious to a veteran service dog handler which pups are not eligible. For example, a dominant pup with prey drive would not serve well as a medical assist dog. If, for example, an EMT or Cop had to break the door down for an emergency; a protective dominant spirited dog would keep the "help" away instead of leading them. A submissive dog with sound sensitivety may spook if a car back fired while performing assistance. Before the dog leaves the breeder and siblings a Volhart testing should be applied. With this information, one starts to train the pup. This is done by playing games. For example a twelve week old puppy sees a tennis ball filled with a treat (through a one inch slit cut in it). The trainer than lets the pup sniff the ball which is than tossed by underhand method. Training lesson #1 -The puppy runs to fetch the ball - trainer turns cheerleader. Training lesson #2 - Because it can not retrieve the snack on the inside, it brings the ball back to the trainer who calls the pup by its name Recall and upon arrivalwho assists by dropping the tidbit in the palm for the pup to enjoy. Training lesson #3 - The pup has also learned Trust and interactive communication with a human. All this leads to a dog retrieving items for a human. But the training starts very young! Certified Canine Behaviorist/Master Dog Trainer, Robin A. Disotell````
- Hello, first let me welcome you to Wikipedia. It is great to have another expert around. Please consider creating an account and participating in the project.
- I have read over the section you mentioned. It not referenced at all and probably should be rewritten. Would you like to help? Coaster1983 (talk) 23:31, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

UKC Standards Links
Just done a bit of a spot check after it was raised on the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel FA review - it seems that most of the links to United Kennel Club standards in the infoboxes don't work as they've restructured their website. The standards are available from a dropdown on http://www.ukcdogs.com/WebSite.nsf/WebPages/LrnBreedInfo which produces a much shorter link than the old version. And to make it even worse, the old links still work, but they link to some sort of login screen.
So if you happen to be working on a dog breed page, check the UKC link to see if it works as I imagine the vast majority of them won't work now. Miyagawa (talk) 08:58, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Popular pages
There's a tool that collects page view data within a wikiproject and publishes them in a table. (see Wikiproject Birds example) I'm going to request it for this project.--Dodo bird (talk) 00:06, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for putting in the request, being able to see which high impact pages most need improving would be a highly beneficial tool. Miyagawa (talk) 17:38, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
- Data collection has begun. You can see the current stats here. By the end of the month, the data can be accessed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Dogs/Popular pages--Dodo bird (talk) 01:35, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Greenland Dog Temperament Section
The temperment section in the Greenland Dog article needs some work. I would be grateful if so someone could rewrite that section. I would do it, but real life commitments are keeping me from properly researching the Greenland Dog. Coaster1983 (talk) 01:13, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Search and rescue dogs - suggested new title
SAR dogs are part of the search function (locate and access) and not the rescue function (with very few exceptions). So, I suggest that this article be retitled either 'SAR Dogs', with an explanation that these dogs are part of the search function, or 'Search Dogs'. Putting 'rescue' into the title may also wrongly direct readers who are looking for an article on 'Rescue Dogs', i.e. dogs that have been abandoned and then rescued with a view to rehoming.
